About the museum

The Musée Sahut is housed in the Château de Bosredon, an 18th-century building modelled on Italian neoclassical villas by the Riom architect Attiret de Mannevil, with a French formal garden. It is located in Volvic, in the Auvergne Volcanoes Regional Natural Park.

The museum arose from the donation of his collection by Marcel Sahut to the town of Volvic in 1985; it opened in 1988. The donor set two conditions: the museum had to be housed in a building made of Volvic stone, and two display cases had to remain permanently in place, one for his artist’s tools and the other for the tools of the Volvic stonemasons.

The collections are eclectic: some 20,000 works, including 800 lithographs by Honoré Daumier, fine arts, graphic arts, decorative arts and non-European arts. A department devoted to lava enamelling opened in 2022 and was enlarged by a new display in 2025 tracing the first century of this technique, from 1827 to 1931. The museum bears the “Musée de France” label and plans a gypsotheque of old plaster casts.
