About the museum
The Musée lapidaire was created in 1950 by Father Douissard, parish priest of Mozac, and Pierre Sabatier, curator of the museums of Riom. Since 1967 it has been taken over and enriched by the association Club historique mozacois. It displays an important group of Romanesque sculptures and archaeological remains from the abbey.
The abbey church of Saint-Pierre was rebuilt after the earthquake of 1451, which had destroyed the chevet, transept and cloister. The fallen Romanesque stones were then reused in the new Gothic walls. Since 1980, the Club historique mozacois has recovered thirty-two Romanesque capitals there, which complete the collection.
The collections belong to the municipality and are managed by the museum service of Riom Limagne et Volcans. The abbey has been a Cluniac site since 1095; its Carolingian crypt can be visited freely in summer.
