About the museum
The Musée matheysin has been housed since 1994 in the Maison Caral, a medieval residence in the old town of La Mure. This house is considered the oldest building in the commune and is said to have been a former Dauphins’ castle.
The collections tell the story of the Matheysine, the Beaumont and the Valbonnais. They cover archaeology from prehistory through the Gallo-Roman period to the Middle Ages, as well as the Wars of Religion, including the siege of La Mure in 1580. Other rooms look at the mining of anthracite and the trades that gave the region its reputation: miners, farmers, glove-makers and pedlars.
The final rooms are devoted to sculptors and painters of the region in the 19th and 20th centuries. Since 2012, part of the museum has presented the work of the abstract painter Claude Garanjoud (1926–2005). An exhibition also pays tribute to the composer Olivier Messiaen, who spent more than fifty years in the Matheysine.
Since 2026, a space has been devoted to Napoleon, with an app and a playful trail for families. The museum bears the label “Musée de France” and offers a new temporary exhibition each season.
