About the museum
The Musée des Beaux-Arts in Louhans was founded in 1885 on the initiative of senator Lucien Guillemaut. Its collections grew through purchases and donations; the patron André Biard was one of the main donors. The museum holds the “Musée de France” label.
It is located on Rue des Dôdanes, in a building it shares with the Musée de l'Imprimerie, a branch of the Écomusée de la Bresse bourguignonne. Since a new display opened in March 2023, the permanent circuit is organized around two themes: academic painting and 20th-century art. It features works by Jean Cocteau, Marie Laurencin, Léonard Fujita and Armand Point.
In spring 2026, the collections were put into storage for works to make the building accessible, including the installation of an outdoor lift. The museum closed its doors after June 13, 2026; reopening is announced for March 2027.
