About the museum
The museum's origins lie in a drawing and sculpture school founded in 1833 in the former convent of the Jacobines. The painter Étienne Bouhot took charge of it in 1834; thanks to works sent as models for the students by his artist friends, the first collections were formed. In 1866, three members of the Société des sciences historiques et naturelles donated more than 10,000 geological samples collected in the Auxois, which led to the creation of a natural history room.
The studio estate of the sculptor Augustin Dumont, bequeathed to the town in 1884, then enriched the painting and sculpture rooms. Archaeological objects from regional excavations and medieval sculptures from the churches and convents of Semur complete the collection.
The museum today brings together a gallery of original plaster casts, a medieval room, and geology, zoology, archaeology and fine arts rooms, with paintings from the 15th to the 19th century. It has been closed for works since 21 September 2026.
