About the museum
The museum is located in Saulieu, a former stopover town on the Paris–Lyon road, in a 17th-century mansion. It tells the story of the town and its region through varied collections and bears the name of the sculptor François Pompon, born in Saulieu in 1855.
On the first floor, one room displays Gallo-Roman funerary stelae from the necropolis of the ancient Sidolocum, followed by two rooms of sacred art with statues and liturgical objects. Also on show is a 12th-century gospel book known as the “Missel de Charlemagne”, whose binding includes two very old ivory plaques.
The upper floor is devoted to François Pompon (1855–1933). It covers his training, his early portraits and his work as an assistant to great sculptors, including Rodin, followed by his specialization in simplified animal forms that made him famous. A room also recalls Saulieu’s gastronomic tradition, with the chefs Alexandre Dumaine and Bernard Loiseau. The museum also organizes several temporary exhibitions each year.
