About the museum

The Maison Vauban is in Saint-Léger-Vauban, the birthplace of Marshal Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban, born in 1633. The Association des Amis de la maison Vauban was founded in 1980 and first presented an exhibition in a former classroom in the village. In 1996 the museum moved into the former house of architect and sculptor Marc Hénard, on the village square, opposite the statue of Vauban.

It is the third themed house in the network of the Écomusée du Morvan, managed by the Morvan Regional Natural Park. The site comprises four rooms, including a projection room, and a shop.

The museum tells the life and work of a military engineer who became Marshal of France under Louis XIV, known for his star-shaped fortifications. It also shows Vauban the town planner, hydraulic engineer and essayist, who proposed reforms in military art, land planning, the economy and society. Vauban remained attached to the Morvan all his life, which he described as it was in the 17th century; in 1675 he bought the Bazoches château near the village, to house his family and his engineers. The museum received the Qualité Tourisme label in 2024.
