About the museum
Les Fieux, in Miers, has been inhabited for more than 80,000 years. A natural cavity served prehistoric people as an animal trap, especially in the Neanderthal era. Later, Cro-Magnon people left a decorated cave with paintings and engravings, some of which date back 35,000 years. The site has been a listed historic monument since 1967, and excavations have continued for more than fifty years.
Today, the Archéosite offers a two-hour discovery tour. It combines a visit to the site with the “Cabinet de Préhistoire”, a small museum space, and includes demonstrations and workshops: flint knapping, fire-lighting, musical and communication instruments, cave art and spear-throwing. The decorated cave itself is not open to the public; it is presented through photographs and a film.
The site belongs to the Cauvaldor community of municipalities, which has entrusted its management to the association Flint’s Lot, a specialist in mediation around prehistory and archaeology.
