About the museum

The Musée Paul Charnoz tells the story of the tile manufactory founded in 1877 in Paray-le-Monial by Paul Charnoz. His tiles, designed using the incrustation technique, made it possible to create large works that were awarded gold medals at the Universal Exhibitions in Paris in 1889 and 1900, and made the factory known throughout the world. Production continued after Paul Charnoz until the end of 2005; the factory then became Cerabati and later Paray Céramiques.

The museum is housed in the former stoneware factory, in the concierge's lodge and in the workers' housing. It presents, in an educational way, the stages of factory life, which shaped the townscape from 1877 to 2005, with machines and documents. Two monumental tile works, decorated through their full thickness and measuring 21.4 m² and 122 m², are on display; they are listed as historic monuments.

The museum is run by an association founded on June 15, 1993 by former employees of the factory. Its mission is to safeguard and promote the artistic and industrial heritage of this manufactory. The memories of former employees complement the presentation of techniques and productions.
