About the museum
The ObservaLoire is the museum of the town of Digoin in Saône-et-Loire. Digoin grew up around water, at the confluence of rivers and at the crossroads of several canals. The museum invites visitors to discover this link with the Loire, presented as the last great wild river in Europe.
The route is organized into themed rooms. The canal room explains the types of canal and how locks work, with models of the port and of a Péniche Freycinet, as well as sound recordings of boatmen. The Loire room presents the dynamics of the river, its catchment basin, the habitats of the Loire and the phenomenon of floods. The Marine de Loire room evokes life in the port of Digoin in the 18th century, with a toue cabanée (a flat-bottomed boat with a cabin) that visitors can climb aboard. The underwater room shows Loire fish in aquariums, with games and a digital terminal.
The building ends with a glazed gallery, the observatory, which offers a panorama of more than 180 degrees over the canal bridge and the Loire. Binoculars make it possible to observe the wildlife and plants along the banks of the river.
