About the museum
The museum’s history begins with the encounter of Paul Longuein, from Saigneville, with a stone-breaking tool (casse-cailloux) once used by road menders. Intrigued by it, he began collecting old tools and meeting Picard craftsmen, who entrusted him with their tools and told him about their trades. The collection now comprises more than 6,000 objects.
Together with his wife, Paul Longuein transformed a former agricultural barn in Saint-Valery-sur-Somme into an exhibition venue. The Musée Picarvie opened to the public on April 15, 1990. In 2005, the founder decided to sell the museum and offered the Syndicat mixte Baie de Somme – Grand Littoral picard the opportunity to become its owner.
The route recreates a Picard village from more than a century ago, with cobbled streets, workshops and living spaces. Visitors see the blacksmith, the basket maker, the cooper, the locksmith, the school, the farm, the dairy and the estaminet (tavern). The museum also covers flax cultivation, peat extraction, woodworking and leatherworking.
