About the museum

In the 1930s a group of scholars, including Roger Rodière, founded a museum devoted to local heritage in Montreuil-sur-Mer. During the Second World War a large part of the collections was looted. The museum then reopened in the chapel of a former orphanage.

In 1983 the wish of Mary Wooster, who had bequeathed her town house to the city, came true: part of the collections was installed there. The Hôtel Acary de la Rivière, built around 1810 in the neoclassical style, is the last town house built in Montreuil. The museum has held the “Musée de France” label since 2003, and it officially reopened in May 2009 in the Hôtel Saint-Walloy. It belongs to the 2P2M network, which brings together several sites in the Montreuil area.

The collections consist mainly of fragments from Montreuil churches destroyed during the Revolution, sacred art objects, including the treasure of the Hôtel-Dieu, archaeological finds, coins, seals, paintings and prints. There are also paintings by French and Anglo-Saxon artists of the 19th and 20th centuries, such as Alexandre Nozal, Louis Montaigu, Harry Van der Weyden and Harry Collison.
