About the museum
The house in Saint-Rémy-lès-Chevreuse was built around 1870 as an orangery, with large glass walls facing south. Simone and Raymond Devos bought it in 1962 and lived there from 1963 until 2006, the year the artist died. For forty-three years, the house and its one-hectare garden were both his retreat and his workplace.
Raymond Devos wanted to preserve his work after his death. The Fondation Raymond Devos, recognized as being in the public interest by decree of January 14, 2009, keeps his archives and runs the site. The Maison-Musée opened to the public in 2016, and in November 2016 it received the Maison des Illustres label from the French Ministry of Culture.
The visit covers almost the entire house and keeps the rooms in their original state. On the first floor are the artist's awards, including his two Molière prizes, the large salon with audiovisual archives and an interactive display, the Abécédaire Devos, and the reconstructed dressing room. On the second floor are the music room with its instruments, the study and a cabinet of curiosities. On the top floor, the “petit musée” brings together unusual objects that the artist liked to show his visitors.
The garden, crossed by the Yvette river, hosts contemporary works such as Le Nid des Clowns, as well as installations and temporary exhibitions.
