About the museum
The municipal museum of Saint-Amand-Montrond was founded in the early 20th century by Théogène Chavaillon. The name Saint-Vic refers to Saint Guy. Since 1938, its collections have been housed in a building that served in turn as the town house of the commendatory abbots of Noirlac, a women's convent and then a prison. The building lies at the back of a garden, in the middle of the town center.
The permanent display fills six rooms and follows chronological order, from the origins of humankind to the present day. It covers the Paleolithic, the Gallo-Roman period, the Middle Ages, folk traditions and the 20th century, with an emphasis on the history of the Saint-Amandois and the Berry region.
Notable pieces include a Gallo-Roman child's head found at Drevant, a site near the town; the bust of the Grand Condé, which invites visitors to tour the Montrond fortress; the Arbres à sabots (clog trees) by Louis Touzet, a masterpiece of folk art; the portrait of Charles II d'Amboise by Bernardino de Conti; and stoneware by the Talbot family from La Borne. The museum combines fine arts, folk art, ethnology, archaeology and industrial heritage.
