About the museum
The museum occupies the birthplace of writer Charles-Louis Philippe (1874–1909), author of Bubu de Montparnasse, Le Père Perdrix and La Mère et l’Enfant. He lived there until the age of 22. The museum has been housed since 1937 in the narrow house, two storeys high, set between two buildings above the town hall of Cérilly.
The house was restored in 1994 and in 2012 received the Ministry of Culture’s “Maisons des illustres” label. It seeks to preserve the atmosphere of the family home. On the first floor, the kitchen, which also served as the parents’ bedroom, houses the writer’s library, brought back from Paris after his death and donated by his family in 2010, along with panels and a display case on his childhood and youth.
The clog-maker’s workshop, with its tools and the old staircase, leads to the second floor, where the writer’s bedroom remains in its original state. Louise’s room presents his work and that of his friends, among them André Gide, Valéry Larbaud and Léon-Paul Fargue, as well as documents on Carnetin and on the illustrators of Bubu de Montparnasse, including some of the 90 etchings by André Dunoyer de Segonzac.
