About the museum

In 1978, Henriette Boutaric, heir to the Sérusier collection, gave the town the La Foire property in Châteauneuf-du-Faou, which Paul Sérusier had painted in 1903. The mayor then began a policy of acquiring artworks, which his successors continued. In 2010 the collection comprised sixty works on paper and ten paintings, supplemented by personal items belonging to Marguerite and Paul Sérusier. In 2017, a public fundraising appeal made it possible to acquire the Autoportrait à la barbe rutilante, and a bequest brought some forty works from the Hôtel Bellevue collection.

A first house in the town centre was acquired in 2013 for the museum. The Brest-based architectural firm L’Atelier de l’Île was chosen in 2021 as architect of the new building, whose foundation stone was laid on May 26, 2023. The building was handed over to the town in April 2025, and the museum opened on June 21, 2025.

The permanent route presents Paul Sérusier, trained at the Académie Julian, who became a co-founder of the Nabis group after meeting Gauguin in Pont-Aven, and his companion and later wife Marguerite Gabriel-Claude, an artist and teacher. It also explores their links with Châteauneuf-du-Faou, where Paul Sérusier had a house built in 1906, and his theories on art.
