About the museum

The association Musée vivant des vieux métiers, or Micheriou koz ar vro in Breton, was founded in 1978 with a harvest festival held to support the rural home-care association of Crozon. The festival’s success led to it being repeated and expanded with demonstrations of old trades. In 1985 the association moved into a shed in the village of Argol, and in 2000 to the Kérampran farm site, where the museum is today.

The museum occupies a former farm with more than 1,400 m² of buildings and a 2,500 m² park where some of the activities take place. Around fifty volunteers take turns running permanent workshops that are active on every opening day: rope-making, basket-weaving, blacksmithing, clog-making, carpentry, weaving, flax and wool spinning, embroidery, wooden spoon-making, sea trades, from apple to cider, from grain to bread, and beekeeping.

On every opening day, a special demonstration complements the visit: old-fashioned crêpes cooked over a fire of pine needles, bread baking, sheep shearing, skimming milk, and making butter or soap. The museum also presents a costume exhibition, an old-style bistro and grocery, and traditional Breton games. It is on the Crozon peninsula in Finistère.
