About the museum
The museum was founded in 1908 from a gift by the painter Félix Ziem (1824–1911), who gave part of his works to the town of Martigues. It was first a fine arts museum. Since 1982 it has been housed in a renovated former customs barracks on the shore of the étang.
In 1991, a bequest from the artist’s adopted granddaughter brought the works from Ziem’s studio into the museum. The collections were later expanded to include archaeology, contemporary art and an important ethnography holding. The museum holds the Musée de France label and regularly invites contemporary artists.
It holds more than 8,000 works: paintings, drawings, photographs, sculptures and objects. Its main highlights are Ziem’s seascapes of Venice, Constantinople and Martigues, along with Provençal landscape painters and Fauvist artists.
