About the museum

The Four-à-Chaux fortress work is one of the largest Maginot Line fortifications in northern Alsace. It was built between 1930 and 1935 and designed to operate independently, somewhat like a submarine, with its own electricity generation, water reserves, kitchens and hospital.

During the 1940 campaign, the garrison held out until July 1, six days after the armistice, before surrendering. The fortress work was then restored by volunteers and opened to the public in 1983.

The guided tour follows a circuit of about 1.5 km, 25 m underground. It shows the living and production facilities of the fortress work, as well as a small museum displaying weapons, uniforms and wartime propaganda posters.
