About the museum
The museum is devoted solely to the battle of August 6, 1870. It went down in history as the Battle of Reichshoffen, but for the French army it was really the Battle of Froeschwiller, and for the German army the Battle of Wœrth. That day, 43,000 French soldiers faced 82,000 men of the German coalition. The French defeat opened the way for the German armies to the Vosges and to Paris, and led to the annexation of Alsace and Lorraine by Germany.
The museum is housed in the château of Wœrth, a Renaissance building with origins in the 13th century, of which a crenellated keep remains. Most of the exhibited objects were found on the battlefield: firearms and edged weapons, uniforms, helmets, caps, tools and objects from soldiers’ daily lives. Also on display are documents, paintings and postcards produced at the time for memorial tourism.
A diorama of more than 4,000 tin figurines recreates a moment of the battle. From the top of the château tower, visitors can climb to a panoramic viewpoint over Wœrth and its surroundings.
