About the museum
Fort Schoenenbourg is a large fortification of the Maginot Line, whose construction began in 1931 near Hunspach and Ingolsheim in northern Alsace. It belonged to the Haguenau fortified sector.
During the 1940 campaign, the fort fired most of its roughly 16,500 shells, especially in the last ten days of June, and suffered heavy bombardment. It ceased fighting only on July 1, 1940, six days after the armistice, on the orders of the high command. The fortification was damaged by the Germans at the end of the war and restored at the start of the Cold War.
Today it is maintained and opened to visitors by the Association des Amis de la Ligne Maginot d’Alsace. It has been restored to its 1939 condition, with no weapons on display. The underground route of about 3 kilometres, some 30 metres below ground, passes through the casemates, the barracks, the kitchen, the infirmary, the filter room and the power station, and follows a small narrow-gauge railway.
