About the museum
The Galgenberg fortress (A15) was built between 1931 and 1936 in the forest of Cattenom. It has two entrances and six combat blocks linked by underground galleries. Its main mission was to observe the Moselle valley from an observation post on the top of the hill, while also flanking the Sonnenberg casemate to the north and the small Sentzich fortress to the south.
In 1940 the garrison numbered around 430 men under Captain de la Teysonnière, drawn from the 167th Fortress Infantry Regiment, the 151st Fortress Artillery Regiment and the 203rd Fortress Engineer Battalion.
Today the association of the fortified sector of the Cattenom forest maintains and restores the site. The visit goes through the galleries, the forward positions and the soldiers’ living quarters; the association also presents a replica of a 1940 gas alarm box, reinstalled deep inside the fortress.
