About the museum

Samara is an archaeological park set in a natural area of the Somme Valley, at La Chaussée-Tirancourt. It presents to the public the research carried out in the region since the 19th century and is built around the site of the La Chaussée-Tirancourt oppidum, known as the “Camp de César”.

Houses built at full scale based on excavations in Picardy allow visitors to discover the daily life of the region’s inhabitants, from the Palaeolithic to the Iron Age. Mediators bring the techniques and crafts of prehistory and the Celtic period back to life.

At the centre of the park, the roughly 1,200 m² Pavillon des Expositions Bruno Lebel houses two permanent exhibitions devoted to prehistory and to 600,000 years of history in the Somme. A marsh, staged as a sensory experience called “Le Marais Mystique”, completes the circuit. The site belongs to the Département de la Somme and is managed by the public body Somme Patrimoine, which also runs the Citadel of Doullens and the Ribemont-sur-Ancre archaeological centre.
