About the museum

On the bank of the Seine at Croisset, the pavilion is the only surviving element of the estate where Gustave Flaubert lived. The family moved into this 17th-century country house in summer 1844. After his father’s death in 1846, Flaubert chose to stay there with his mother and his niece Caroline. It was here, away from Rouen, that he wrote Madame Bovary, Salammbô, L’Éducation sentimentale and Bouvard et Pécuchet, and welcomed writer friends such as Louis Bouilhet, Maxime Du Camp, the Goncourt brothers, George Sand and Ivan Turgenev.

Flaubert died at Croisset on May 8, 1880. The main house was sold in 1882 and then demolished. The pavilion was bought back, given to the City of Rouen in 1906 and turned into a museum. After a period of works, it reopened to the public in 2021.

It displays a few intimate souvenirs of the writer: personal objects, writing equipment, portraits, engravings and views of Croisset in Flaubert’s time. Since January 1, 2021, the pavilion has been part of the Réunion des Musées Métropolitains Rouen Normandie, where it forms a literary cluster with the Musée Flaubert et d’histoire de la médecine and the birthplace of Pierre Corneille. A small garden surrounds the pavilion.
