About the museum
The Cox area, in Toulouse Gascony, is one of those lands of clay, forests and water where the craft of pottery long shaped the landscape. More than 60% of the population lived from pottery. Notarial deeds prove the presence in Cox of earthenware potters, pot painters and traîniers from the 16th century onwards.
The museum occupies the home and workshop of the potter Joseph Laballe (1886–1942). The whole follows the traditional layout of the region’s potteries, with a south-facing porch. The rooms trace the history of Cox pottery through remains, notarial deeds, maps and photographs, and display the kiln made of unfired earth bricks.
The route comprises five rooms: pottery from the 16th and 17th centuries in three periods (decorated light-coloured clay, dark unornamented clay, cooking pots), pottery from the 18th and 19th centuries, the kiln and the workshop. One room also presents the harness of the carter’s horse. The museum is run by volunteers and presents a rare, authentic craft structure of this type in south-west France.
