About the museum
Pressoria occupies the former pressing center of the Pommery house in Aÿ-Champagne, a witness to the house’s architectural and industrial heritage, which flourished at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries. The building consists of a main building, which housed the press, and an annex, the former lodging of the winegrowers. It follows the Pommery style, with red bricks, towers and turrets and tall, narrow windows.
The complex stood empty from 2001. In 2008 the Communauté de communes de la Grande Vallée de la Marne bought it to create a tourist facility devoted to Champagne wines. The project received support from the State, the Grand Est Region, the Marne department and numerous patrons. The original appearance of the building was restored; the necessary extensions (offices, restaurant) were added discreetly.
The permanent trail invites visitors to explore geology, climate, the vine, the grape harvest and the making of Champagne with all five senses. It includes an educational vine garden, a blending workshop with an oenologist, a 360-degree room devoted to effervescence and, at the end, a guided tasting with views over the vines. The neighboring hillsides have been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2015.
