About the museum
The 50er-Jahre-Museum in Büdingen goes back to the collection of the couple Else and Walter Arbeiter, who for decades gathered objects from all areas of life of the economic miracle era. On November 21, 1999, the museum opened for the first time, run by the newly founded association 50er-Jahre-Museum e. V.
It is housed in the former "Herberge zum Schwan" on the Marktplatz, a late Gothic town inn from around 1490. In 2009, with support from the city, an annex was built for a milk bar, cinema, newspaper kiosk and stage, which almost doubled the exhibition space; the flood in January 2021 destroyed it along with many exhibits. In 2020 the Arbeiter couple donated the collection to the city of Büdingen; the association continues to run the exhibition.
According to its own information, it is the most extensive 50s collection in Germany, with an estimated more than 200,000 objects, about a tenth of which are on display. The museum also hosts concerts, film evenings and themed exhibitions.
