About the museum
The museum goes back to the couple Marlies and Klaus-Dietrich Keßler, who bought the old Lohrei farm in Streitberg in 1993 and restored it in keeping with its heritage status. In 2003 the collection of Waechtersbacher ceramics moved into the roughly 200-year-old half-timbered barn.
The Waechtersbacher ceramics factory has existed since 1832, and in Brachttal-Schlierbach since 1834; production there ended in 2011. The collection presents a cross-section from the beginnings to the 1950s, with emphasis on Historismus, Jugendstil and Art Deco. The Waechtersbacher Jugendstil of the art department, which Christian Neureuther led from 1903 to 1921 and which maintained close contacts with artists of the Darmstadt Mathildenhöhe, is particularly well known.
Art Deco and Bauhaus pieces are shown in a former agricultural silo converted into a museum room; another room is a small half-timbered house built in 2010. In 2022 the couple received the special prize of the jury of the Kulturpreis of the Main-Kinzig-Kreis.
