About the museum
The Allgäuer Burgenmuseum has existed since 1985 under the sponsorship of the Allgäuer Burgenverein e. V. (Allgäu Castles Association) and was initially housed at Westendstraße 21 in Kempten. In 2004 it moved to the warden's house on the Burghalde, in the former fortress (Veste). The move was the occasion to completely rework the museum concept, which has been continually updated since then.
The museum is a volunteer-run private museum and part of Kempten's museum landscape. It regards itself as the only museum on castle studies in the Allgäu and is financed through admission fees, donations and grants.
In numerous time windows it shows the development of the Allgäu castles from the 12th/13th century to the present day. One focus is “Living and Household”: archaeological finds, historical originals and high-quality replicas of everyday objects and tableware give an impression of the good parlors (guten Stuben) of the Allgäu nobility. In addition there are weapons, armor parts, models and reconstruction drawings; some objects, such as helmets and chain mail, may be touched.
