About the museum
The Heimatmuseum Buchenberg is housed in a smallholder's house that Johann Haggenmüller from Eschachberg built in 1924 and farmed together with his three sisters. Later the married couple Jakob and Franziska Finkel continued the farm—Franziska was the family's foster daughter—which is why the building was called the "Finkelhaus". The childless couple offered the property to the municipality in 1970 on a lifetime-annuity basis. Mr. Finkel died in 1983 and his wife in 1991; by then it was clear that her house should live on as a local history museum.
Members of the Heimatgeschichtlicher Verein Buchenberg (local history association) converted the derelict building into a museum from 1986 to 1993, working on many weekends with their own hands. The guiding idea was that as the older generation passes away, knowledge of everyday life, work routines, customs, and traditions is lost, and the museum was meant to counter this.
On the lower floor, the living room, kitchen, and bedroom are furnished as the last residents might have used them; the children's room became an old schoolroom. In addition, the completely preserved workshop of Buchenberg's last shoemaker is on display. Exhibitions and events take place in the barn (Tenne).
