About the museum

The poet and cultural historian Hermann Allmers (1821–1902), known for example for the "Marschenbuch" and the poem "Feldeinsamkeit", set to music by Brahms, grew up on his father's farm in Rechtenfleth on the Lower Weser. According to recent building research, the hall house dates back in its core to the 17th century and was altered several times in the 18th and 19th centuries.

After his great journey to Italy, Allmers had the house and garden redesigned from the 1860s with artist friends. The living quarters received a second story and a stepped gable, and the facade decoration was created by the Bremen sculptor Diedrich Kropp. Inside, one above the other, an Antiquities Hall painted by Arthur Fitger for Allmers's collection of plaster casts and the Marsh Hall with pictures on German cultural history were created, including the six-part Marsh Frieze by Heinrich von Dörnberg. Allmers wanted to give his homeland a place of artistic and historical education; the house was open to the public even during his lifetime.

Since 1988 the listed property has belonged to the district of Cuxhaven and is looked after by the Hermann Allmers Society, which also tends and researches the poet's estate. In spring 2025 a comprehensive renovation began: the artworks were taken down and put into storage, and first the facade, windows, gable and roof were repaired. Work on the interior is to follow from summer 2027; afterward the German Foundation for Monument Protection intends to take over the museum.
