About the museum
Around 1200 the Archbishops of Bremen had a wooden castle built on an artificial mound in the damp floodplain, to protect the Bramstedt church against rebellious Stedinger farmers. After the victory over the Stedinger in 1234, it served mainly for administration and jurisdiction of the archbishopric; out of the timber building grew a "Festes Haus" (fortified house) with a chapel.
Its present form, a brick building of about 30 by 10 meters with a cellar, two main floors, and grain lofts, was given to it in the early 16th century by Archbishop Johann Rode, who used it as a summer residence. In 1575 Archbishop Heinrich III of Saxe-Lauenburg married here; the unusual grisaille paintings in the chapel and on the upper floor date from this period. Later the complex belonged for a time to the Swedish diplomat Schering Rosenhane and then passed to the Electorate of Hanover.
Services were held here until 1820; the castle was also an administrative house and a prison, and from 1846 to 1978 employees of the local court lived there. Today the Kultur- und Heimatverein Burg zu Hagen im Bremischen e. V. (cultural and heritage association) operates the historic building as a cultural center, with changing exhibitions, concerts, readings, and weddings in historic surroundings.
