About the museum

The Alsterverein, founded in 1900, was already collecting finds on the history of the Alstertal in its first years, from stone axes to pewter jugs. For a long time, however, it lacked a permanent exhibition venue; the objects were first stored in the founding pub and later scattered among members.

When the City of Hamburg bought the Wellingsbüttel estate in 1938, the Baroque gatehouse of 1757 came under discussion, but the war delayed the plans. After the left wing of the building was restored, supported by donations from the district and funds from the Kulturbehörde, the Alstertal-Museum opened on 27 October 1957. After the right wing had also been restored by 1973, the exhibition moved in 1970 into the former farm workers' dwellings of that wing.

The volunteer-run exhibition shows prehistoric finds, including sectional models of two burial mounds, farm tools and clothing, as well as pictures, maps and photographs on the development of Wellingsbüttel, Hummelsbüttel and Poppenbüttel. Separate rooms are devoted to cargo shipping on the upper Alster and the former narrow-gauge railway between Wohldorf and Alt-Rahlstedt. The house also has a specialist library.

Since 2025 the listed gatehouse has been undergoing extensive renovation; the museum and library are closed until further notice.
