Museum Alte Kornbrennerei
Local history museum of the museum association in a listed former grain distillery in Sundern, on crafts, industry and everyday history.
About the museum
The building on the Röhr goes back to a late medieval defensive tower of around 1500, whose arrow slits can still be seen. In 1632 Ludwig Kleinsorge acquired the property. In the 19th century it was developed into a commercial operation: in 1844 the town approved its use as a machine house, in 1856 the stable and living quarters were built, and the family used an agricultural distilling right. In 1882 Kleinsorge registered the grain distillery as a business, around 1900 the boiler house was added, and in 1909 the chimney that still stands today. At the end of the 1960s, distilling operations ceased.
The impetus for a Sundern local history museum came in 1989 from the then mayor Franz-Josef Tigges; the museum association was founded in the same year. After a brief search, the already listed grain distillery was chosen as the museum building. The volunteer-run association has around 100 members.
The collection is devoted to the crafts, industry and economic history of the town. Among other things, visitors can see memorabilia of the Röhrtalbahn railway, a dentist's practice from 1923, products of the Kleinsorge distillery, a cobbler's workshop, office and writing supplies, machines and objects from Sundern's lighting industry, local mining and companies such as SKS, Severin and Schulte-Ufer.
