About the museum

The town of Balve had a local history museum from 1927 to 1953, and parts of its holdings went into today's collection. The Museum für Vor- und Frühgeschichte (Museum of Prehistory and Early History) opened in May 2006 after extensive renovations in the former Wocklum bar hammer mill, a building on the grounds of the historic Luisenhütte Wocklum blast furnace complex.

The focus is on the history of the Hönne Valley, from the Devonian seas through the Ice Age to the Middle Ages. On display are, among other things, bones and teeth of mammoth, cave bear, and woolly rhinoceros as well as Stone Age tools and weapons from the caves of the area, including the Balver Höhle.

As part of the "Geschichtspark Balve" project, funded among others by the Heimatförderung program of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and by Aktion Mensch, the building was comprehensively renovated starting in 2021. Since July 11, 2026, it has been open again under the new name MUBA – with an accessible entrance, modern themed rooms such as the Time Tunnel and the Turbine Cellar, and a room for museum education. The Geschichtspark links the museum, as a signposted circular trail, with the Balver Höhle, the Luisenhütte, and Schloss Wocklum.
