About the museum

Viticulture around the Alsenhof at the foot of the Hornisgrinde is old: the first traces reach back to the 14th century, and since the 16th century property records have repeatedly mentioned a wine press (Weintrotte) in a separate building. It is therefore assumed that the basic structure of the press goes back to the 16th century. The estate mostly belonged to noble families, at times to the Kollegiatstift (collegiate foundation) Baden-Baden; in 1808 a record harvest is recorded, when 16,000 liters went into the foundation's cellars.

The press was rediscovered in a half-ruined press house, painstakingly restored, supplemented with viticultural equipment and opened to the public in 1970. It is made entirely of oak and weighs around 300 Zentner. The press beam comes from an oak trunk over eight meters long; the screw is 3.85 meters high. In a single day about 2,500 kilograms of grapes could be pressed into 1,800 liters of juice, which flowed through the floor into the cellar below.

In the vaulted cellar, old viticultural tools are on display. The local culture and heritage association opens the press in the summer season and serves guests coffee and cake.
