About the museum
In Sasbach, a French monument has commemorated Marshal Turenne (1611–1675) since the late 18th century; he fell here on July 27, 1675, in a battle against imperial troops. The Strasbourg prince-bishop, Cardinal de Rohan, had the monument built between 1782 and 1785, and a house for a French guard built beside it. Over time the monument was destroyed and rebuilt several times – four versions in all – and its history reflects the changing course of German-French relations. In 1940 the National Socialists tore it down; in 1945 it was rebuilt and inaugurated by General de Gaulle.
In the former sentry house, the Turenne Museum opened in April 2001 as the first branch museum of the Haus der Geschichte Baden-Württemberg. The exhibition tells of Turenne, the battle, the veneration of the commander and the monuments, and at the end turns attention to the present and future of the neighboring countries. The operator is the municipality of Sasbach; the museum, in the German-French Museum Park, sees itself as a place of encounter and reconciliation.
