About the museum
The Amtsturm is the last surviving part of the Eldenburg, which the Brandenburg margraves Otto and Hermann had built in Lübz between 1306 and 1308. The defensive tower, with its late Romanesque appearance, is considered one of the best-preserved of its kind in Germany. The castle was later converted into a palace and served from 1547 to 1634 as a widow's residence for Mecklenburg duchesses; after the death of Duchess Sophie, the complex fell into disrepair and was largely demolished around 1700.
Since October 1976, the tower has housed the Lübz town museum. On four floors, reached via a narrow spiral staircase, it deals with the castle, the development from village to town, local crafts and life around 1900. In the top room beneath a rare cellular vault stands the original tower clock mechanism of 1856; the history of the brewery founded in Lübz in 1877 is also told there.
In June 1999, exhibition rooms were added in the cellar of the Amtshaus, a ducal administrative building erected in 1759 on the remains of the castle, which now serves as a community centre. There you can see a historical office, traditional crafts and a parlour from grandmother's day. The museum is run by the Verein Lübzer Land.
