About the museum
The Natur-Museum is housed in Goldberg's former water mill, a technical monument. The half-timbered building was built around 1730 right on the small Mildenitz river. In 1960 the museum, founded as early as 1927, was given the building, which was converted until 1969; this created exhibition and work rooms, an archive, storerooms, outbuildings and a workshop. The then director Hans Hentschel and his colleagues created the natural history museum together with the farmhouse garden through great personal commitment.
The exhibition deals with the flora, fauna, archaeology and geology of the town and its surroundings as well as town and craft history, under the guiding idea “Landschaft erzählt Geschichte” (landscape tells history). Numerous taxidermy specimens – including a wolf – present the region's wildlife: species that have adapted to the landscape shaped by humans, and those that can hardly find niches in which to survive. The black kitchen (Schwarzküche) of the old water mill is also well worth seeing.
Behind the house, by the water, lies a farmhouse garden with culinary and medicinal herbs and a shady orchard meadow. Events are held regularly in the special exhibition room. The tourist information office is also housed in the building.
