About the museum
The Einhorn-Apotheke in the so-called Blaues Haus, a late Baroque building in Weißenburg's old town, has existed since the 17th century. During later renovations the old furniture was not thrown away but stored in the attic. In the 1970s the pharmacist Artur Binkert decided to use it to set up a museum in the disused cellar vaults and to furnish it with surviving 19th-century equipment.
In the former medicine cellar beneath the pharmacy, which is still in operation today, stand the complete dispensary and laboratory from the time of Wilhelm Kohl (1848–1898), who ran the pharmacy from 1879 and, as section commissioner of the Reichslimeskommission, researched the Raetian Limes. On the first floor, the former materials and herb chamber has been restored.
Since 1986 the museum has been run by the foundation “Kohl'sche Einhorn-Apotheke”, which commemorates Kohl and the Binkert family of pharmacists and promotes the history of pharmacy. During the Covid pandemic the herb chamber was extended by one room and the guided-tour concept was revised. New additions include a long-term loan of books on the history of pharmacy and medicine going back to the 18th century, as well as a herbarium from the 1950s with more than 100 plants.
