About the museum
The ReichsstadtMuseum opened in February 1998 as the successor to the former local history museum. Together with the RömerMuseum it forms a museum complex grouped around a courtyard in the center of the old town. In 2005 the "Haus Kaaden" was added as an extension: with holdings from the former Kaaden homeland rooms, it commemorates the flight and expulsion of Germans from the East after the Second World War and their reception in Weißenburg.
The tour follows not the chronology but the spatial structure of the house, and takes up aspects of the history of an imperial city in individual sequences. It begins with the Holy Roman Empire, with imperial history, the imperial constitution and the special form of the imperial cities. On the second floor come art and science, the council constitution of 1377, with which the town gave itself a democratic constitution, the town court, and economy and health care. On the third floor the topics are walls and fortifications, the church, and guilds and crafts.
