About the museum

The Protestant town church St. Andreas in Weißenburg was begun around 1300, and the nave was consecrated in 1327. The late Gothic hall choir was built between 1425 and 1465, and the tower was finished in 1520. The rich pre-Reformation furnishings of this civic church were largely lost in the 19th century, when they were scattered around 1850 in a belated iconoclasm.

What survived is shown in the treasury, which was set up in the mid-1990s in the former sacristy behind the high altar. The pieces stand behind glass. The most precious object is a Romanesque altar and processional cross from the 12th century. For the first time the Weißenburg reliquary treasure is on view as well; it was rediscovered in 1930 and includes eight enthroned apostle figures from around 1400 and two textile head reliquaries.

Further exhibits include a triptych with embossed silver reliefs, a small double altar with a St. George group and a Gnadenstuhl (Throne of Grace) in alabaster, candlestick angels, communion vessels and textiles from the early 16th to the 19th century, whose donor inscriptions attest to the citizens' attachment to their church.
