About the museum
The foundation of the collection was laid in 1879 by the classical philologist Richard Förster with the purchase of twelve casts of ancient statues of gods; as early as 1873 Heinrich Schliemann, who had received his doctorate in Rostock, had given the university a cast from Troy. Under the archaeologist Gustav Körte the cast collection grew by around 150 works, and from 1902 the first originals were added, including vessels from Schliemann's finds.
In the early 20th century the collection received Egyptian finds from the necropolis of Abusir el-Meleq, the Herold collection with over 400 mostly ceramic objects, and the Schwerin cast collection. Lack of space, wartime losses and the transfer of many plaster casts to Berlin's Humboldt University from 1958 onwards, however, severely affected the holdings. In the post-war period Roman marble works were added, including the Adonis Sarcophagus.
After the founding of the Heinrich Schliemann-Institut in 1991 the collection was revived: in 1998 the cast collection reopened, and since 2006 the original collection has been on permanent display in the institute building on Schwaansche Straße. In 2008 the collection of the Greifswald classical studies departments was added as a long-term loan; since 2018 the cast collection has been presented in the Jakobi-Passage on Kröpeliner Straße.
