About the museum

The Funkenburg sits on a hill spur above the Helbe valley near Westgreußen. People returned to the site again and again over millennia – from the Neolithic and Bronze Age to the era of the Thuringian kingdom in the 6th century. It was especially important in the last centuries before and shortly after the turn of the era, when a fortified Germanic settlement stood here on the border with the Celtic La Tène culture.

Between 1974 and 1980 the site was systematically excavated under the supervision of Thuringia's archaeological heritage authority. The archaeologists found traces of numerous huts and hundreds of pits, as well as pottery, costume elements and imported items that attest to contacts as far as Scandinavia and the Danube region.

Based on these findings, the complex was rebuilt as an open-air museum from 1992 to 1999 – with an outer and main bailey, ditches, ramparts, palisades, a gate tower and a watchtower. The project involved a non-profit employment company from Sondershausen, the Kyffhäuserkreis district and the municipality. Inside stand reconstructed dwellings and pit houses, a large longhouse, storage buildings and several working clay dome ovens. Today the museum is run by the Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund, Sömmerda district branch. Besides self-guided visits, there are programs for school classes and groups, children's birthday parties and event days such as the Funkenburgfest and a historical crafts week. The site has received the Thüringer Denkmalschutzpreis (Thuringian heritage protection award).
