About the museum
Greußen had its first private museum room as early as around 1910: the watchmaker Günther André displayed finds in the Margaretenhof behind the Lochmühle. After the Second World War this collection was looted several times and much of it was lost for ever, including old club banners.
The present local history museum goes back to the pharmacist Paul Lörmann. Around 1931/32 he set up a town archive, and in 1934 he began collecting documents and everyday objects from the townspeople. The museum opened at the autumn fair on 13 September 1936, and after the war it reopened on 3 April 1953. From 1968 Lörmann’s wife looked after the collection. When space was needed in the town hall for the administration and the registry office, the museum moved to the former Bärwolffsche Haus on Geschwister-Scholl-Straße.
Since the thorough renovation of the town hall from 2000 to 2006, the museum has occupied the ground floor and cellar of the town hall on the market square. During the conversion a small cellar room was discovered, the “Hexenkeller”, which can now be seen through a glass panel in the floor. Also on display are the town’s history, Lörmann’s old court pharmacy, everyday objects, craftsmen’s tools, and grotto stones and fossils.
