About the museum

The Heimatfreunde Leubingen e.V. was founded in April 1994 with the aim of giving the village a museum again, building on an older tradition. Leubingen had shortly before been incorporated into the town of Sömmerda as a district, and the town supported the project. The collection was housed in the old vicarage, which was built in 1715. The “Heimatstube” opened on 15 June 1995.

Today the association shows almost 5,000 exhibits in 13 rooms covering around 200 square metres. One focus is the Leubingen Prince’s Grave from the Early Bronze Age, excavated in 1877 by Professor Friedrich Klopfleisch of Jena, which gave its name to an entire culture: the burial chamber, the grave goods of bronze and gold and a smith’s anvil stone are displayed as replicas. A model of the burial mound was added in 2000, and later findings from the excavations along the A 71 motorway followed.

The exhibition also depicts rural life: craftsmen’s workrooms, a farmhouse kitchen and bedroom around 1930, a parlour, a wash house, a children’s room with over 300 games and toys, display cases with clothing and porcelain, and a GDR room with National People’s Army (NVA) uniforms. The association is the operator, and the Heimatstube is part of the museum landscape of the town of Sömmerda.
