Sprechende Bilder

In the Kunstkammer Rau, masterpieces from 1400 to 1800 from the National Museum of Luxembourg enter into dialogue with major works from the Sammlung Rau für UNICEF.

About the museum

The neoclassical Rolandseck station was built in the mid-19th century on the railway line along the left bank of the Rhine, and with its ballroom and terrace above the river it became a popular meeting place for society. From 1964, arts patron Johannes Wasmuth turned the building into a lively "artists' station" with concerts, exhibitions and studios for artists.

After Wasmuth's death in 1997, activities came to a halt until the building reopened as an art museum on October 22, 2004. On September 28, 2007, the white new building by New York architect Richard Meier, rising on the hillside above the station, was inaugurated. The museum is run by the state foundation Landesstiftung Arp Museum Bahnhof Rolandseck.

At its heart are works by the artist couple Hans Arp and Sophie Taeuber-Arp. Since 2008 the museum has also looked after the Sammlung Rau für UNICEF, with paintings from the Middle Ages to the modern era, shown in the Kunstkammer Rau; in 2015 a major donation of collages from the Gerhard Meerwein collection was added. Changing exhibitions bring together classical modernism, Old Masters and contemporary art. Julia Wallner has been director since 2022.
