About the museum
M.1 is the house of the Arthur Boskamp-Stiftung, founded in 2003 from the estate of the entrepreneur and self-taught artist Arthur Boskamp (1919–2000). The foundation promotes the visual arts and culture and runs M.1, which opened in 2007.
The building, the "Massivbaracke 1" (solid barracks 1), was built in 1913 as accommodation for the troops of the Lockstedt camp, a Prussian military training ground that existed from 1875 to 1918. Afterwards it housed refugees and returning soldiers, later an SA sports school; from 1946 it was used by the company Pohl-Boskamp. From 1985 to 2001 Arthur Boskamp ran the "Kunsthaus Boskamp" here. Today the roughly 1,200-square-meter house offers eight flexibly usable exhibition and work rooms as well as guest apartments.
The program is led by an artistic director, whose position is publicly advertised every two years and who shapes the house for about one and a half years at a time. In addition there are promotional awards for visual artists with ties to Northern Germany and the format "M.1 Lokal," which bridges art education and amateur culture. The foundation is also renovating the former soldiers' home of the architect Fritz Höger.
