About the museum
The Museum am Wasserturm in Hohenlockstedt is located in the former pump house next to the water tower and is run on a voluntary basis by the Verein für Kultur & Geschichte von Hohenlockstedt (association for culture and history). The water tower was built in 1901/02, was in operation until 1984 and has been a listed monument since 1983. After extensive renovation, it was made accessible as part of the museum in 2007.
The museum has three sections. A permanent exhibition commemorates the Finnish Jäger movement: from 1915 to 1918, around 1,900 Finnish volunteers were trained in the former Lockstedt camp, and later stood up for Finland's independence. A second section is devoted to the local history around the Lockstedt camp, the former training ground. The third section shows changing exhibitions.
