About the museum
The Attendorner Feuerwehr-Museum association was founded in 1986; the idea arose during the celebrations of the 100th anniversary of the Attendorn fire brigade in 1985. The foundation was laid by the long-serving chairman Werner Johannes (1986 to 2006) with his private collection. A first exhibition opened in two rooms of the fire station in the founding year.
As the holdings kept growing, the association opted for a building of its own. It was built with the active help of more than 150 firefighters and over 20 companies and haulage firms, directly next to the fire station, and opened in 1992. In 2002 the gallery was extended by another 100 square meters, so that the exhibition area now covers more than 700 square meters on three floors.
On display are large exhibits such as old hand-pump fire engines, wooden ladders and vehicles, over 150 helmets and caps from around the world, orders and decorations, nozzles, pumps, hand fire extinguishers and pictorial records. Changing exhibits and special displays keep the offering fresh. The museum aims to preserve historical firefighting technology and inform about fire hazards, and it provides teaching material with which children can explore the history of firefighting.
